Nukove is one of my favorite dive sites of all the places I have had the opportunity to
go. No matter if you travel north or south the coral is magnificent. On this particular
dive the group decided to go north. Just getting to the reef is an adventure. You weave
your way through a narrow trough with lots of elkhorn and fire coral on each side. The
swim is about 100 yards and for the first one half or better the water is very shallow. In
order to save air for the reef it is best to snorkel as far as possible.
On reaching the reef the first thing that grabs your attention are the large coral heads. They are huge and plentiful. Unlike other areas there is no empty space, coral occupies every square inch of the bottom. You can begin diving at 30 feet and go down to more than 150 feet. The coral is so abundant that boats dropping anchors are unable to retrieve the anchor when they are ready to leave. So all along the reef you find old rope that has been cut and left behind.
The marine life is also abundant. This is one of the few places in Bonaire you can be sure of finding Barracuda. On this dive we also ran into some very large Grouper. Of course all the small animals are every where due to the amount of coral.
If you enjoy an environment made for the animals of the ocean and you have the opportunity to go to Bonaire don't miss a dive at Nukove.
